About Me
I am in school now pursuing my second career. What most people don’t know about me is my life before school or what I call my first career. For 18 years, I was a dance teacher and choreographer. Five days a week I would put on my pointe shoes and massage the hopes and dreams of little girls to become ballerinas. My feet bled. My muscles ached. My hours were atrocious. And I loved every minute of it. I was married in 2002 to Shawn Coleman. In 2004, our first child was born, Maxwell. It was then that I realized that I could not keep up these hours much longer or I would never see my son. I began to think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I am not like most people in the program. I did not always know that I wanted to be a teacher. I did know that I could reach children, especially those in high school. I did know that I loved to read and write. Finally, during one of our many conversations about where my life was going to go, my husband gave me an ah-ha moment. “Why don’t you teach English?” In that second, I knew he was right, and I enrolled at KSU the following semester.
My life is pretty hectic now. I am an aerobics teacher, a full-time wife, a mother of two, and a full-time student. I am often up at 2:00 in the morning writing papers and completing assignments, but I can’t wait for this next chapter to begin.
